do get the Doctor Who Confidential for this eps (get them all if you can) you will see even more details like how the Sontarans looked in the past and now.
the interviewed Collin Baker but not Tom.. Sad I would have love to seen what he thought.
Al if you have not seen this eps yet I will say do watch it very closely there are some background things that may be pointing to later eps's /
Ok thats all don't want to spoil anything ..

Re: The Poison Sky
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 6:28 AMColor me unimpressed by this one. It was just cliche after cliche, building to what has got to be the Worst. Science. Ever. in Doctor Who.
What is it with this show's obsession with showing "news" reports to portray the situation as a global disaster? I noticed RTD liked doing this, ever since he made "The Second Coming" with Christopher Eccleston. I thought it was silly and stale even the first time he used it Doctor Who.
And the Doctor came across as extremely foolish and stupid during the final confrontation, as if he was genuinely surprised the Sontarans called his bluff. Of course, this was solved by yet another predictable cliche.
And that twee commentary in the resolution, "i saw kids riding bicycles... gee, isn't it wonderful!", just made me cringe. Even though I agree with the sentiment, this was bad writing.
I already knew about the plot for next week's ep... interesting idea, but i'm a bit apprehensive about how it'll be exectuted. We'll see. -

Re: The Poison Sky
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 12:22 PMNot to insult you but you do realize that RTD is writing this for Kids more than Adults and well simple minds and all .
I can't say after watching the eps a second time that this eps is as strong as the first part or the ones before but it was good just it seem to miss something.
BTW I was watching one of the early Doctor.Who.Confidential for one of the eps and RTD said he was having to pitch the eps to someone and admitted to making it up as he went ...and some times it can show.
End of the world story lines are not bad but yes they seem to be over done some. RTD wants to have grand scale problems for the Doctor to fix but seem to have no problems with losing the smaller people .
I like to know some more on the next the eps but not too much.. One thing I like to know is who has control of the TARDIES as they only people who could do that Trick last i saw was the Timelords when they want the doctor to do something

Yes, and that's the problem IMO. It's supposed to be a family show, appealing to people of all ages, not just something for kids and people with simple minds. It should be something people can enjoy as kids and still enjoy when they rewatch it 20 years later.
It certainly sends mixed messages if a show is trying make social statements (as Who has a long tradition of doing, and was clearly being done here) and encourage kids/viewers to think for themselves, and then turn around and say don't think about any of this, just blindly accept it as light entertainment and nothing more significant. -

Lawrence Miles "gets it"
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 8:29 PMEverybody should go read this review by an author whose written a number famous Doctor Who novels. It's a bit long, but it hits the nail right on the head. I'd love to see something written by him in the new show.

Re: Lawrence Miles "gets it"
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 11:40 PMOK this post has SPOILERS
.... good lord and this season was going so well. The first episode was so silly and cutesy but
donna came into her own and overall the episode wasn't any major problem.
Then Pompeii was excellent and at some point I may post about how planet of the ood
may just be a perfect episode... not great but perfect.
Part one of this was OK but not great
Part two... OK but rediculous....
the flaming sky and the doctor is going to sacrafice himself
or try to bluff.... LAME...
didn't anyone see the second apparance of our long lost friend
when she tried to call out through the tardis TV screen....
and I agree about next week, interesting idea but god only
knows how well it will get pulled off.
Is it possible she is not a timelord and still his daughter.
we'll see.
Cheers

Next Episode - not a spoiler
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 10:44 PMNot the best sign for the next episode... it's being written by the guy who did "the Lazarus Experiment".

...add the terrible trailer and it might be a good idea to close your eyes and cover your ears.

Tue, May 6, 2008 - 9:46 PMTRAILER SPOILER?
Just a hunch, but they showed the hand in the jar (from Torchwood) bubbling (I think twice). Maybe she is a clone, or is somehow connected to Torchwood or... Susan's mom is a good possibility too.
The "Buffy" look of the character, especially the backflips through the lasers.... and the glimpses of the setup, sets and aliens look really 1998-2000 scifi channel...
Then again, I'm a pessimist.

Yep; cute. Really the funniest moment in the whole show for me was when they are describing the planet's nuclear defenses coming on line, and right after India and Pakistan they toss in "North Korea." Funny. Odd that they didn't mention Russia, or maybe that got cut from the Sci-Fi Channel airing so as to squeeze in a few more seconds of ad space.
Flaming sky was weak. Every time he needs to save the whole planet/galaxy/universe/humanity, he pulls something out of his ass at the last minute. Deus ex assina.

Re: The Poison Sky
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:13 AMI don't think the Show has been a Kids show for some time but all I hear in the Doctor.Who.Confidential s is "Oh we don't want to make the kids scared..Or I how they like the bad guy" Why aim things at 8 year old kids and dumb down a plot.
The first part last week was great they brought back a good old bad guy and updated the look with out lost of who and what that are.
But all to wow kids? Doctor who has many more adults in the UK and US that are part of the over 40 crowed then kids under 10.
With the doctor being gone for so long they will have to base their viewers ratings on those people more than kids.
I think RTD thinking with a box and not as much out side it . I think the they need to look more to updating the stories to fit those who will and want to watch the show Family show or not Sci Fi show this old need to change . Torchwood was great spin odd idea but it seems to fix RTD ideal of sci fi show them everyone else .
For get the kids get in there and do stories that are going to hold everyone on the edge of their seats
I think one of the things that work in a good story arc was the cliff hanger endings not the lets wrap this up in 55 mis or less .. there is no way you build good character interaction in that time if they are only in that eps for that time.
We have people out there that can write good stories and have done so RTD need to use them but I fear he will not so we can only hope that that who ever take over afterhim can bring things back .
I looked over the Doctor's Daughter posting online and there are tons of people giving out ideas of where this story will go and if it was something from one of the books from the classic story line but no one can tell as of yet.
this season had a good start and it was going well . Part two wasn't as good as the first half and that was a bad slip.
Lets hope this isn't going to be a sign of the next eps and those after to how they will play.

Re: The Poison Sky
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 5:58 AMyou can do scary and intense scifi and still get kids to watch, they arn't dumb and shouldn't be pandered to.
Besides, there is always the sarah jane adventures for the young kiddies to watch. -

Re: The Poison Sky
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 12:27 AMAnd you proved my point As Sci Fi channel here is pushing it on Fridays SciFi line up.
WHY? its a kids show.. Somethings i think that were better off with just the one show.
RTD I think is trying to make bunch of spin off shows so even if he leaves the Doctor he will still have his hand in the cookie jar.
I do like the the new Doctor who shows as it will give ground for other as thing go. I think the music has really been up graded.
Murry Gold has done very well and find ways to enhance an eps with the right sounds. It better than the 80's and 90's sound track that sounded that if you were going to a Disco party.
And yes I download the torrens for Sarah Jane just to see how they did the show.
and for kids show i think they were much more like the old Dw shows.
No over use of easy outs but yes we has a sonic device that didn't always save the day and yes we had great plot twist that kids would not have seen right off coming.
One thing I would ask all is to watch the Doctor who Confidential as see they are putting a lot of work on the show its just i think the FX is wining over scripts in some areas.

Re: The Poison Sky
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 8:42 AMGood acting, snappy dialogue, well fleshed out characters (except for the two Marthas.) The Sontarans haven't been so cool since the Tom Baker era. Storr was a great villain. All the wonderful character and dialogue work allowed me to forget about all the plot holes until the episode was over.
However:
1.) The science was horrible horrible horrible. How come the atmospheric converter didn't singe all the birds in the sky and set the world's forrests on fire? Shouldn't there have been a massive shock wave when the clone feed ignited? I tolerated the bad science in Impossible Planet/Satan Pit because the story was otherwise excellent.
2.) The Sontaran stratagem made no sense. If they wanted to Sontara-form Earth, couldn't they have just dropped bombs from orbit without the subterfuge? There was no reason to use Luke and the Atmos company unless there was some sort of orbital defense they could not work about (see "Invasion of TIme")-- if that was the case, they needed to show the orbital defense.
3.) UNIT had too easy a time fighting the Sontarans once they got themselves some new bullets. Why didn't UNIT just use the Valiant's laser to blow up the base from the air.
Helen Raynor has the same strengths and weaknesses as RTD: Good dialogue, good character writing, bad plotting, bad deus ex machina. -

Re: The Poison Sky
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 12:21 PMI was a little surprised to see the punkass (Rattigan?) do something utterly selfless at the end. Very out of character. Sure, he was angry about being betrayed by the Sontarans, but he was willing to wipe out humanity for the sake of starting over with a pre-select handful. Then he was willing to obliterate himself to rid the world of the Sontarans? I'm not buying it.
And why did they come on only one ship? AND WHY NOT USES MARS OR VENUS RIGHT NEXT DOOR???
