All I can say on this eps is as the Doctor would put it is .... WHAT!!! WHAT!!
(and those who have seen this eps know what I mean)
I wish I could stream this too all who have to wait till the 18th or DVD's to see it.
This is a great start to this season.. The Doctor and Donna are off on a great start.
Oh and for those who can get Torrents look for this funny Skit

I think some at the BBC did it as it very slick looking and well cut of clips.
I'll see if some one has posted it to You-Tube yet

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 3:29 PMOverall I thought that it was kinda flat.
The only redeeming points were Donna's having packed in advance for her TARDIS departure. (very funny), Rose's mysterious appearance.
The nanny was lame; as were the fatty kiddos. And did they ever explain how the Nanny had a sonic screwdriver? I thought that they were solely used by timelords?!
Still look forward to the season, but the kick-off was a bit shakey.

Mon, April 7, 2008 - 1:14 AMWatch the Doctor Who Confidential for this eps it very good and help in seeing where they are going with the show I feel.
I will say I had very good laugh with this one again I think Tate was added to change things a bit but I hope not to turn the show in comedy. i eojoy the fun stuff but too much could drop the pace.
the ending was somewhat of a shock as I wasn't thinking we see that till later eps... I wonder if the Rift could be in play here ...?

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 12:39 AMNow I know that there are real die heart fans of the Doctor and some more to the classic over the new shows.
I know that the New shows are not anything like the classic shows but we are looking at a different world and Market.
Doctor who Was made for Kids and was never suppose to have had so many adults into it. this last eps was very "Kid like" and yes it wasn't the greatest eps but its was very fun in some ways and very "Er what heck was that" and then we get the plot twist and all to set up another eps later on this season. I watched the Doctor Who Confidential for this first eps and it shows a lot of work that went into the show and it looks like the had to do a bunch of re-shooting due to the actor that Plays Donna's father died during the shows filming and was replaced with the Grandfather..This can change the pace in any production cause the pace of the show drop.
I think people need to let the BBC and the people producing the show know what is working and what isn't and I don't mean write in to say it suck and you are not going to watch it anymore.. that does not work.. if we stop watching the show gets canceled and we get no Doctor Who.
And i do feel we in the US have as mauch to say about the shows and how the are being written as much as those in the UK.
Now with this break coming up and a change in who is producing and direction the shows we can make sure that the shows try to get back to what made the Doctor worth turning in to watch. I still think we need to watch and support the current shows to keep those markets open as if we do not the show could drop off the air here and the UK and we could never get any new shows good or bad.
IT could have been worse they could have just re-made the shows from eps one season one and tried to push whole new version on us and re-wrote the who series from the ground up.. And they did think about doing that at one time....That would a slap in the face of all those who supported the show over last 40 plus years.
Was this the worse eps ever? no will the eps get better? We can only hope but the only way to keep them from getting worse is to tell those in charge what we think.
I have ...but if more were to write there faster change ....

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 5:11 AMi'd rate this episode about "average" or maybe slightly below. RTD really likes to hit us over the head with his formulaic patterns (especially the bitchy moms). I can't stand that stupid triumphant music that was played when aliens were stopped (I think it was the same music that played when time was reversed in Last of the Time Lords), and it just emphasised the fact there wasn't really much of any real menace to be emotionally invested in at all. Still, at least the villainess was played straight, which puts this miles above a story like say "New Earth" (the worst season opener so far). And Donna is already better than either Rose or Martha.

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 12:14 AMI thought it was great, Catherine Tate really brings something of herself and her humour to the show I think. I think it will be a great season.

that people would say this about me speaks to how they could approve of the majority of what RTD does.
for the umpteenth time, i will remind you of my rampant enthusiasm for the moffat-penned eps (like "blink" and "the girl in the fireplace"), and my overall much greater approval of the first season.

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 6:54 PMI do have to agree that RTD is probably the most repetitive plotter I can think of working in TV or Movies today. He is ok at writing dialog - good banter, but even JNT wrote better plots. The story for this episode was terrible. Yes, doctor who was/is a kids show too, but I can't think of very any episodes from the past that were this deliberately pandering, and demeaning to a child's intelligence. And - I agree that Paradise Towers was awful (most of McCoys run was)... and the Underwater Menace, the Twin Dilemma, etc. But, they were "childish" and terrible in different ways. The fact is. I've let a few friends outside of Doctor Who watch some of the previous seasons and they are less than charitable. Outside of Blink, The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, Girl in the Fireplace, Family of Blood, etc it's tough to watch.
Dalek in particular, which got quite a bit of praise on the message boards, was unbearably pretentious.
RTD has three switches: Fun with banter and innuendo (sometimes successfully), attempted excitement (almost never successfully), and low-level political allegory (easy enough to answer).
Doctor Who was never perfect, but the flaws in the past used to be why I liked it.
Now it has become a bit "Americanized" and it's flaws less excusable to me. But, that doesn't mean others shouldn't enjoy it or all opinions should be pro or con. GORdon's, and other's, Satan's advocate positions can add to the discussion. We aren't going to affect any change in the program, but the fan-discussion is a good percentage of the fun.
After all, I'm probably even more negative than GORdon... I think that Lalla Ward, Nicola Bryant, and Sophie Aldred were three of the worst things that ever happened to the show.
(Representing the best: Caroline John, Mary Tamm, Pat Troughton, Jacqueline Hill, Richard Franklin, Barry Letts, and Philip Hinchcliffe)
RTD is somewhere in the middle. He brought the show back with a lot of energy and did some ok writing. But, he has been spinning his wheels for years now and would benefit by someone like Nick Briggs taking over.

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:01 PMI amsorry on if we are getting off track at to who likes or hates which eps and all but I think that we all agree RTD did good at first start and I think he was take off course with a change of Doctors right after getting very large and good numbers of reviews . The current Doctor I do like but the Scripts do test to reflect the views of the people writing. and i will go there the Doctor Who shows never were or ever had much to do with sexual pref or there in . and this wasn't a day time drama this was geeky Scifi at its best and it had charm in that and we need that charm back.
RTD will be gone after DW come back this has been said and hope to be true. Who ever we get I to take over i hope has some sence of the original shows and how they came about.
I can't say that show has been "Americanized" I think it had been more generalized to fit in with what ever mindless dribble they call entertainment. RTD has not said if he will keep doing Torchwood but I think that he will.
Adding Torchwood into the mix was interesting. In the past the Doctor had UNIT to rely on and no one was looking at the Doctor as they do now a man that come in and bad things happen.. .. its almost like some re-wrote history and the Doctor has taken on a darker side that we did not see before.
I stand by what said if we want bettre we have to demand it. We in the US may not have much said but those of you in the UK can.
Don't give up Fight ... I know I never saw much past the Tom Baker years and I could not stand Davidson that much I didn't see any of the Collin Baker Doctor and McCoy saw but a few and like those few..
The show had to change the way it was shot so FX and all were bound to change (the got better that good) But with the Doctor being go for so long Change of the store line was something we have to deal with. We do not have the writer of the past and the stories that made us all sit the edge of or chairs as we wated for the monster to jump out only to get the Shows end credits pop up and we had to wait a week to see if the Doctor made it or if Sarah Jane was carried off (again).
Good stories are like Magic .. they happen when all believe it can happen. really it dose...and the writers need to get back to believing in that and not "Americanized" the show or dumbing it down or doing anything that didn't happen before.. stick to what works not going off with banter about some ones butt or sexual innuendos. Blink was great we didn't see the doctor till all was over and it was out sink and it worked.
(note they seem to be taking the TARDIS away for salving every plot like don't they?)
Ok thats my views let write letter and email and scream at those at the BBC and how some is taken a count of what the fans want.
and if don't work well at lease we tried and we can come her and vent with friends that under stand why we are all upset.

this could have been something I misunderstood but I was sure they said Russell T Davies's was doing this.

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 12:46 AMhere is the answer if RTD is going to leave ..
www.guardian.co.uk/media/20...elevision
"Wenger will join the BBC early in the new year, where he will work closely with Gardner during a 12-month handover period.
He will take over Doctor Who for its fifth series, which is expected to go into production in the summer of 2009 for broadcast in spring 2010.
Wenger, 35, left his job as head of drama development at Granada, where he worked with Wood on the Bafta and RTS award-winning Housewife, 49, earlier this year to help set up independent producer Mammoth Screen.
Davies and Gardener will continue to work on Doctor Who for the next 18 months, overseeing the fourth series which is currently in production and is due to air from the spring of next year, as well as three specials for broadcast in 2009."
So we will be getting new blood and hope a new direction that all will love....

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:15 AMForgive me for asking Gordon, this isn't meant as a smartass question, but if you think the majority of the shows in the more recent seasons are so bad, why do you watch? I've seen shows where, if 4/5 shows I didn't like, I'd just stop watching, I wouldn't keep watching in hopes of an ep I'd enjoy.
I love Doctor Who, haven't seen an ep I didn't like. I think it's contemporary and smart and fun. Tho I admit I'm a newbie to the show, didn't watch it much before it came to SciFi or any of the older series. Anyway, I thought this was a great ep. I loved the window interplay between the Doctor & Donna, and that they interact really well.
Rose being in there, that I didn't quite get though. And did SHE fade out at the end of the ep, or was that a general fadeout of the scene? -

From the hilarious Wired Guide to Trendy French Philosophers:
www.wired.com/wired/archi...pomo_pr.html
Foucault
Michel Foucault explored and analyzed the political and bureaucratic aspects of control and punishment. He was among the first to recognize and define our emerging technocratic surveillance culture in terms of the "panopticon," a multitiered prison complex in which all activity is visible to the overseers. Poor Michel. He didn't know about anonymous remailers. -

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 3:37 PMI watch and enjoy the new series, but I cannot help lamenting how much it falls short of being as adventurous or interesting as the best parts of the original show. The original show for sure had its share of stinkers and filler, inevitably, being the longest running sci-fi show in history. But I think I can generalize and say that the original show feels open-ended and full of possibilities, whereas the new series feels linear and formulaic. I think Gordon's criticisms are largely valid. To me, the show tries too hard to be "contemporary, smart, and fun" and while it often succeeds, this is not really a good thing. A "contemporary" show today may well appear dated and hokey in a decade or so, and I suspect this will be the case with much of the current series. People will think, "this is very '00's". The older series, when it was good, allowed one to overlook the goofy costumes and dodgy effects and appreciate a genuinely gripping and intelligent story, which could be satirical without being banal. That's the problem for me- the current show is obsessed with "postmodern" cleverness and will never allow itself to be serious or really thought-provoking or simply strange, unless some good writers take charge.
I urge you to check out some choice stories from the old show and experience the difference. -

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 12:07 AMhey draven - not too seriously
I like to poke fun at Gordon and all the
lamenters....
goodness ryan - like the old shows don't look dated and silly in many ways
and not transcendent a lot of the time....
just go back and watch fires of pompeii or planet of the ood
again and think about being 8 years old watching it and
all the amazing comic book action with thoughtful positive framing
and really smart talk and ideas and compassion overflowing....
I think you guys are confusing your romanticism and taste
for quality
every generations doctor reflects its time and you guys are just STUCK
more in your time.... would it be great if they were more open ended sometimes
sure...
would it be great if they were written by philip k dick and directed by
stanley kubrick sure that would be fun...
but not in the same way as they are now...
beautifully, wonderfully magically, gloriously FUN!
Swell RTD background music.

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:10 AM"like the old shows don't look dated and silly in many ways

As I already said, quite alot of the old show was not so hot. I explicitly referenced only the better parts. In 4 seasons the new series has not come close to them.
"and you guys are just STUCK
more in your time"
Huh? What time? I'm 25 years old. It's not like I'm asking that the show look like it was made in the 70's or 80's or something. Your argument seems to be that anyone who has a problem with the new series is some old fart set in their ways. I can think of plenty of shows that I grew up with and loved and which I now realize are god awful. Case in point- Battlestar Galactica, and in fact I regard the new BSG as infinitely superior. No, I can identify bad writing regardless of time period.

Re: Episode 1 - Partners in Crime
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 2:33 AMwell I thought it was just what the opener for a new series and new companion should be. Antipose was clearly the back story to donna getting back to the doctor. I was afraid from reading spoilers that donna would have been all moony over the doctor or have just been moping around but first she tried travelling the world and realized she wanted even more than that. she really is going with the doctor for the adventure and not to be with him. LOVE THAT. I like donna quite a bit, she doesn't look cheap, isn't a child, is allowed to disagree with the doctor and not have to eventually agree with him all the time.
As for the story I liked that the big bad wasn't the wee ones but the naughty nanny. I thought it was great that the kids were so cute and that they didn't get nuked.
wonder if we'll see that reporter again?
