Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish!

David Tennant was one of the worst Doctors ever, only slightly less bad than Colin Baker and Jon Pertwee.

With the new casting, the new series looks like The Doctor Who Babies, but I hope hope hope that Steven Moffat, one of the best writers the show has ever had, will steer it in a much better direction than Russell T Davies, one of the absolute worst writers the show has ever had.

End of Time Pt.2 - (spoilers)

I think that had a longer finale than Return of the King.

Far more satisfying than part 1, I had only a few problems with the episode. The orbit they put the ship in is nearly halfway to the moon. Hard to call an orbit at that point. Earth would be much smaller and a few other details. It's so easy to check stuff like this.

The other part I had real problem was with who Timothy Dalton's character turned out to be. I had no problem with him as president of the council of Time Lords but what was the point of calling him Rassilon? And if he was the creator of the Time Lords, Tardises, and the whole slew of artifacts of godly power (Sash of Rassilon, Key of Rassilon, Lunch Box of Rassilon, etc.) it's unlikely The Doctor or any Time Lord could have stood up to him. Someone tell me I heard this wrong because it doesn't make sense. Bad 007. Bad 007.

So, does the interior of the Tardis in flames mean Moffat gets to redecorate?

Leverage

I've recently discovered a show on TNT called Leverage. It's *great* fun. :) I'm catching up on Netflix. According to Wiki, "Leverage follows a five-person team of thieves, computer experts and con artists, headed up by former insurance investigator Nate Ford, who use their skills to right corporate and governmental injustices inflicted on common citizens." They call it a drama, but I wouldn't put it in that category. Anyway, on the fifth episode, they're in an airport trying to catch a flight, and the computer/techie guy asks them what IDs they have with them so he can surreptitiously add those names to the flight list and they can board. Nate says, "I have... Peter Davison..." I thought, "Oh, what a coincidence." Then he said, "And Sylvester McCoy... and Tom Baker." It was a really unexpected place to have a little shout-out to the Doctor Who fanbase, especially since a) it's an American show, b) it's not in a genre typically associated with the sci-fi/fantasy fanbase, and c) they're all names from the old Doctor Who, before the popular RTD resurrection, so you'd have to be a long-time/hardcore Doctor Who fan to get the joke. I thought it was very cute. :)

End of Time pt.1 - (spoilers)

I forgot it was on today. Then I rushed to grab it and was disappointed Was it all for that terrible pun at the end? And what was the point of having the Master fly? Or shoot lightning bolts? Or the point of the alien scientists? It felt like 3/4 of the time it was just filler with no advancement of story, tying loose ends or even entertainment. Just killing time for the cliffhanger which should have come half-way through at the latest.

I still have hopes for part 2.

Even though BBC America will not show Waters of Mars until Dec. 19th. The End of Time, Part One will air on BBCA on Dec. 26th which is just one day later than the UK. I didn't notice a date for part 2 which should be about 2 weeks later.

I'm glad RTD revived the series -- I really am -- but I wish he'd bail on the writing.

This seemed really hamfisted to me, and just basically a setup.

I don't like that he treats all older women characters like shit except Sarah Jane. No, no, he made her catty, though. Probably knew that if he DID screw with her, he'd wind up getting a broken nose in a pub somewhere.

I don't like that he telegraphs things so blatantly. I don't like that at all. I'm finding already that I'm not fond of that in Torchwood, either.

Waters of Mars had all the action and thrills of Transformers 2, as well as all the compelling plot.

Planet of the Dead - Spoilers

I've really enjoyed the new series and the writing of Russel T. Davies but this episode seemed like he was writing a cliche of itself. It has a lot of Davies' earmarks but they appear as if they were pulled off the shelf and tossed in like making soup. Boil in a pot for one hour then done. It just seems like so much we've all seen before. It's easy to picture Davies' childlike glee as he ads the different pieces but there's nothing to the story or characters that make this interesting. This might be okay as part of a full season but there's nothing here that merits a special extended episode. I can pretty much remember all the characters in Midnight, the other trapped on a bus episode. But other than the temporary companion and the lady with the eerie prediction at the end none of them are memorable. Lady Christina De Souza, international jewel thief is a boring and tedious companion, a throwback to days when companions served no purpose other than to help explain the timey wimey bits to the audience. Yeah, she does an expected master thief bit mid-episode in a scenario that seems totally written just for that purpose.

I've heard that the bus was damaged when transported to Dubai and caused a major rewrite of the story. Maybe it was all a rushed mistake. Still, not as bad as the Red Dwarf Back To Earth just run. One weekend, two major disappointments.

Next episode is titled: The Waters of Mars
Other sites have noted Davies' fondness for anagrams. When the series was being revived, the tapes were passed around in secret, labeled "Torchwood" and "The Waters of Mars" can be rearranged to "The War of the Masters".

Season 4 on BBC America but .. guess whats..

Hi all just saw last week they started showing the 4th season but at the end of the X-mas Special they got to the Ship almost hitting the ground and ... that was it credits rolled . the young guy on the ships bridge said's We made the Doctor said's not all of us.... all cuts to black and credits roll..and that wasn't the only place they cut and I thought that the SciFi channel wasa cutting the show I now thing its the BBC maybe as to why leave out on the BBCA showing the end of the eps that get it alla good ending?Watching the first eps Partners in Crime now.. betting they cut it as well..

but so far they left in the taxi driver asking for the young lady that get Ad a posed..to say...

You thought new Doctor Who in the UK was over till Christmas,
right? Well, BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc. co.uk/radio7 and Big Finish
http://www.doctorwh o.co.uk are out to prove you wrong. Paul McGann
returns as The 8th Doctor and Sheridan Smith returns as Lucy Miller
in eight 50 minute full cast radio episodes - Sundays at 6PM and
Midnight UK Time starting 19 October. Paul McGann played the Doctor
in the 1996 TV Movie and in many Big Finish direct to cd audio
stories since 2001. He is the official 8th Doctor, the link between
Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor in Classic Who - late 1980s) and
Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor/New Series 1/2005).

This is actually the second set of Paul McGann audios made for BBC
Radio 7. An earlier set of 8 Paul McGann/Sheridan Smith episodes ran
in late 2006/early 2007. That time the episodes aired on the radio
before getting released on CD. For these new episodes the CD releases
came first, which is why the radio run was delayed a bit. No word on
whether the previous BBC7/Big Finish Doctor Who series is going to
repeat soon.

But then others liked his presentation. Wish I could get to Stratford to see it, but my Tardis is in the Shop.

Well then...aside from some kinda BS explanations for the subwave network, and a few other things, I rather enjoyed myself. So, will the Doctor regenerate into someone new? David has signed on for next season/series, so how would he come back? Will he revert back to the 9th Doctor? Is there still something on Donna's back?

And what was up with the crappy graphics? The scene when the planets popped up and you saw the TARDIS floating in the Medusa Cascade...it looked kinda hokey...It reminded me of the early days of Doctor Who....and what about the "TO BE CONTINUED" thing at the end?

I'm not complaining, I really liked it. I am quite excited for next week.

Oh...My...God.

What a great episode. I had totally forgotten about Bad Wolf and wasn't expecting them to be the two words. But it definitely makes perfect sense. Pretty predictable, what would happen to alternative Donna, but it was very interesting to see what would happen if there was no Doctor. Everyone else who he has touched (or would have touched) in some way, went the extra mile and ended up dying to try to save the world. Imagine the rest of the universe, what happens there.

Anyone else notice that the home they were sharing (at least the entrance way) with the Italian(?) family, was the same one that was used in Last of the Time Lords where Martha was hiding and talked about the Doctor? Labour camps? When the grandfather said something like "here we go again", was he referring to WW II? Or is there a similar incident in British history I am unaware of? I thought it was quite believable, the progression of events and the establishment of the homes and then the expulsion of immigrants. I can see that happening in such extraordinary circumstances.

There does seem to be something about Donna huh? River said something about her, or just implied it by her "you're Donna" look. And her "specialness" was enhanced by todays episode when Rose said something about her having a 'field' around her since she was born. Donna is special. I quiet like Donna...but will she be back next time?

Next week...Sarah Jane, Captain Jack and left over crew, Martha and Rose...good Gods! Refresh my memory...there is no next Season/Series right? They will do some miniseries type thing, but nothing until 2010. So they are probably doing a bit of a going away thing.

Bad Wolf?

I saw a bunch of the episodes with references to Bad Wolf, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the whole explanation for it.

Is it because I've missed an episode, have forgotten the explanation due to baby-induced sleep deprivation, or because we haven't seen the explanation for the whole "Bad Wolf" thing?

Does anyone know what "Bad Wolf" is?

I just watched it. I really enjoyed it, though I was bothered by some of the character development. Seemed to happen all too fast, but they only had 45 minutes. Either way, Sufficiently creepy...especially after just seeing The Happening.

Next week looks....um...not sure the word. At least we will finally figure out what is on Donna's back.

Forest of the Dead - spoilers

This two parter had lots of great ideas .... (some like the idea that books have a kind of spirit that talks to you and plants have a kind of spirit that can talk to you - that didn't get played out enough) .... And it also had some weaknesses like the whole moving shadows sneaking up on you like the crying angel statues.... been there done that way to recently...
but overall as noted more and more in other threads... it got to a point where if you are able to suspend your disbelief and go for the ride ... you just start getting all giddy. Just joyously excited and enthused and happy. Nothing in the whole world of ideas alone would ever be enough without the emotional excitement to balance it. The doctor is ideas and feelings.

Episode 11: Boom Town (SPOILERS)

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this one, as I found the previous Slitheen adventure to be the weakest in the series thusfar... but I have to admit that I really enjoyed not only the overall story, but the almost constant comedic banter. The relationship emerging between the Doctor and Captain Jack is fun and I really liked how the tension erupted between Rose and Mickey. Margaret's attmept to kill the Doctor while they had dinner was priceless. I also really liked the moment when the 'Bad Wolf' references were finally acknoledged... and then dismissed. I can't wait until next week!

Ha ha! What a fantastic episode!!

I knew that it was going to be a good one from the moment Donna started up with her botched jazz era British colloquialisms. The reaction that both the Doctor and Donna had when meeting Agatha Christie just cemented it.

The music that punctuated the scene where the Doctor was poisoned was insanely brilliant, and the way that the episode slowly transitioned from lighthearted and comical, to serious and sober was well-paced.

My only complaint is the silly little relationship that they had to toss in between Roger Curbishley and Davenport, the butler. No point to that at all.

It's official: MOFFAT TO REPLACE DAVIES

Scriptwriter Steven Moffat was today named lead writer and executive producer on hit BBC1 drama Doctor Who.

Moffat, who has written a number of episodes of the show - including the acclaimed Blink episode which won him the Bafta writer award at this year's TV awards - will replace Russell T Davies.

Davies, the key creative figure behind the Doctor Who revival in 2005, stands down next year.

The appointment makes Moffat Doctor Who's show runner - the key creative force behind the programme - on the fifth series, which will be broadcast on BBC1 in 2010.

As well as Blink, his previous work on Doctor Who includes The Girl in the Fireplace for Series Two, which earned him his second Hugo Award. His first was for the Series One two-parter The Empty Child

Davies said: "It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!"

Davies and Julie Gardner, the BBC Wales head of drama, who have worked on the fourth series of Doctor Who and are working on three specials for broadcast in 2009.

In 2009 BBC Wales, which makes Doctor Who, will also have a new head of drama when producer Piers Wenger takes over from Julie Gardner.

Time Crash

OK ... am I just completely behind here? I just watched Time Crash, and either (a) no one else has seen it, (b) I missed all the discussion, or (c) no one is appreciating one of the coolest things in DW in years!

David Tennant and Peter Davison together for a seven-and-a-half minute mini-ep?! It was brilliant!

The dialogue was SO snappy! So many fantastic little one-liners. I was smiling the entire time:

Over the years there have been three ensemble episodes: "The Three Doctors" in '72, "The Five Doctors" in '83, and "The Two Doctors" in '85. (And last year's "Time Crash" if you want to count it.)

If there was to be another ensemble ep., say ... "The FOUR Doctors", who would be your four? (Take into account that the actors have aged as well, so you might have to pull a Richard Hurndall trick.)

Include companions if you wish, and I figure that Tennant is implied, yes?

- if only 7 days have passed how come there were old people if they all start off around 20
- where did the drones go

Classic Who

I'm watching some of the classic episodes. Right now I have 'The Face of Evil' on. I forgot how much I loved this series.

Something else I found interesting are the striking distances between the classic and the new. The new is far more complex, though the classic is still quite entertaining.

I was reminded of a comment someone said about the (new) Doctors continuing comments about guns and such. In the Face of Evil, there have been a lot of comments about violence and the Doctors abhorrence towards it. It does seem a bit obvious...though, at the same time, he's holding a crossbow.

Planet Of The Ood Eps 3 spoiler....

Ok first i want to get the jokes out of the way.. now if you have tonights or as of now last nights eps by torrent ot you recored it.. search the tape/dvd/media file for shot of the Ood's head them look at the shot and look for clear shot from the back got it? Eeww.... ok I will say no more....Stop laughing now and movie on...

I need to go back now and see the eps that induced us the Ood I think in the time line it was before this event.. IF so RTD has abit of problem...but them man can't even get his own time line and stories right that would be bad.

I think the store was good it carried on with Donna keeping the doctor from being All that and she is till in wonder of her adventure.

I like the opening shots of the planet.. Nice CG I think the Ship that comes in over head look a bit like a well known ship of Sci-Fi in the UK and US...look at it and Think about it for bit...

Bad the good and the call of cthulhu

What can i say but this was a very good and deep eps and it was good to see a more of a back great story to the Ood even if they look like bunch of cthulhus out of H.P. Lovecraft or a call of cthulhu game(I know the guy who made the game he loves the Ood)

I like to have seen more of where they lived as the plant is a bit cold looking and I would thing more of an underground dwelling for them.

The bad guy here is somewhat of an ass but another greedy sod I think not much to write about but it was good to see what happens to him.

Ok well I don't want to say more I leave all to you guys and I'll come back as the post goes .. Please go easy on the site gages and jokes... WE all know by now that RTD must have a say on how the Ood looked like (if you looked as I said at the start) its bad very bad. we all caught it hear and it was laugh and pun fest for a bit...

George Orwell Was Right: Spy Cameras See Britons' Every Move

Dec. 22 (Bloomberg) -- It's Saturday night in Middlesbrough, England,
and drunken university students are celebrating the start of the
school year, known as Freshers' Week.

One picks up a traffic cone and runs down the street. Suddenly, a
disembodied voice booms out from above:

``You in the black jacket! Yes, you! Put it back!'' The confused
student obeys as his friends look bewildered.

``People are shocked when they hear the cameras talk, but when they
see everyone else looking at them, they feel a twinge of conscience
and comply,'' said Mike Clark, a spokesman for Middlesbrough Council
who recounted the incident. The city has placed speakers in its
cameras, allowing operators to chastise miscreants who drop coffee
cups, ride bicycles too fast or fight outside bars.

Almost 70 years after George Orwell created the all-seeing dictator
Big Brother in the novel ``1984,'' Britons are being watched as never
before. About 4.2 million spy cameras film each citizen 300 times a
day, and police have built the world's largest DNA database. Prime
Minister Tony Blair said all Britons should carry biometric
identification cards to help fight the war on terror.

``Nowhere else in the free world is this happening,'' said Helena
Kennedy, a human rights lawyer who also is a member of the House of
Lords, the upper house of Parliament. ``The American public would
find such inroads into civil liberties wholly unacceptable.''

During the past decade, the government has spent 500 million pounds
($1 billion) on spy cameras and now has one for every 14 citizens,
according to a September report prepared for Information Commissioner
Richard Thomas by the Surveillance Studies Network, a panel of U.K.
academics.

Who's In Charge?

At a single road junction in the London borough of Hammersmith, there
are 29 cameras run by police, government, private companies and
transport agencies. Police officers are even trying out video cameras
mounted on their heads.

``We've got to stand back and see where technology is taking us,''
said Thomas, whose job is to protect people's privacy. ``Humans must
dictate our future, not machines.''

Blair said citizens have to sacrifice some freedoms to fight
terrorism, illegal immigration and identity fraud.

``We have a modern world that we are living in, with new and
different types of crime,'' Blair said Nov. 6 at a press conference
in London. ``If we don't use technology in order to combat it, then
we won't be fighting crime effectively.''

Constant Monitoring

In the bowels of New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the London
police force, a windowless room contains a giant bank of TV screens
where the city is monitored around the clock. At the touch of a
button, officers can focus on any neighborhood and zoom in on
people's faces.

Police hunting the killer of five prostitutes in Suffolk were able to
gather 10,000 hours of footage from in and around Ipswich.

By 2016, there will be cameras using facial recognition technology
embedded in lampposts, according to the Surveillance Studies report.
Unmanned spy planes will monitor the movements of citizens, while
criminals and the elderly will be implanted with microchips to track
their movements, the report says.

``The level of surveillance in this country should shock people,''
said David Murakami Wood, a lecturer at the University of Newcastle
who headed the study. ``It is infiltrating everything we do.''

Wood is also concerned about the U.K.'s growing DNA database. The
files contain the genetic codes of more than 3.8 million people, or
5.2 percent of the population. By comparison, the U.S. has the DNA
records of 0.5 percent of its residents.

DNA matches helped solve 45,000 crimes in the U.K. last year,
including 422 murders, 645 rapes and 9,000 burglaries, according to
the Home Office. But the database isn't foolproof.

Burglar Who Wasn't

Police who knocked on Raymond Easton's door in Swindon, England, in
1999 were certain he had committed burglary at a house 200 miles (300
kilometers) away. DNA found at the scene was a 37 million-to-1 match
with Easton's sample, which had been taken three years earlier.

Easton, a former construction worker, had Parkinson's disease and
could barely dress himself. He was still charged. Further tests
proved he had never been to Bolton, where the burglary occurred,
according to the Greater Manchester police.

``Britain's DNA database is spiraling out of control,'' said Helen
Wallace, deputy director of GeneWatch U.K., which campaigns for
responsible use of genetic science. ``It could allow an unprecedented
level of government surveillance.''

Other government plans include loading the confidential medical
records of 50 million patients in the state-run health system onto a
central database without their consent.

Most controversial of all are Blair's biometric ID cards linked to a
national register holding every citizen's fingerprints, iris or face
scan. Starting in 2010, anyone renewing or applying for a passport
will have to get one.

``Desperate for some sort of legacy, the prime minister has nothing
to offer but Blair's Big Brother Britain,'' said Phil Booth, national
coordinator of the anti-ID card group NO2ID.
